March 18, 1990 - Rick Moranis hosts the Juno Awards at the O’Keefe Centre.


Feb. 5, 1990 - Debut of the series “Material World” featuring Laura Bruneau, Jayne Eastwood, and Linda Sorensen, airs on CBC.


May 10, 1990 - Yuk Yuks open their Olde Towne location in Edmonton.


July 11, 1990 - Yuk Yuks - The TV Show debuts on CBC. Guests on the first show include Herb Dixon, Sheery O’Brien, Stephen J. Daniels, and Mike Cliff.


July 18, 1990 - Johnny Wayne of Wayne and Shuster passes away.


Sept. 12, 1990 - The final episode of Yuk Yuk’s - The TV Show airs on CBC with guets Robert Cait, Lawrence Morgenstern, and John Woodbury.


Nov. 5, 1990 - Shot in Agassiz and Vancouver, the series “Max Glick” makes its debut.


Dec 12, 1990 - “Sunset”, the final episode of the Beachcombers, airs on CBC.


Jan. 19, 1991 - Mike Myers debuts Coffee Talk with Linda Richmon on SNL.


March 3, 1991 - Paul Shaffer hosts the Juno Awards from the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver.


March 15, 1991 - Unknown comic Brent Butt opens for a just-emerging Celine Dion at the Winter Garden Theatre in Toronto.


March 16, 1991 - Michael J. Fox hosts SNL.


April 13, 1991 - Catherine O’Hara hosts SNL.


May 29, 1991 - Jesse Camacho, of “Less Than Kind” , born in Montreal.


Sept. 24, 1991 - Vancouver comic Colin Campbell goes missing.


Nov. 26, 1991 - Leslie Nielsen hosts the 12th Genie Awards at the Pantages Theatre in Toronto.


Dec. 1991 - Mark Breslin’s book “Son of a Meech-The Best Brian Mulroney Jokes” is launched.


Jan 1, 1992 - The body of comic Colin Campbell is discovered in the woods near Qualicum Beach, BC.


Jan. 15, 1992 - Memorial Show/Benefit for Colin Campbell held at Punchlines in Vancouver.


Feb. 12, 1992 - Mike Myers film “Wayne’s World” is released.


March 29, 1992 - Rick Moranis hosts the Juno Awards at Toronto’s O’Keefe Centre.


June 29, 1992 - Mike Myers begins shooting “So I Married An Axe Murderer”.


July 17, 1992 - Jim Carrey kicks off his Canadian Tour, with opening act Jeff Rothpan, at The Vincent Massey Auditorium in New Westminster, BC.


Aug. 29, 1992 - “The Spider”, Rosie Shuster’s Emmy nominated episode of “The Larry Sanders Show” airs.


Oct. 30, 1992 - Debut of Friday Night with Ralph Benmurgui on CBC. Opening show features guests Don Cherry, Scott Thompson, and comic Judy Croon.


Oct. 31, 1992 - Catherine O’Hara hosts SNL.


Nov. 22, 1992 - 13th Genie Awards in Toronto. Upset at print ads bragging about the host being “the biggest star we could find”, a weight-sensitive John Candy pulls out and is replaced at the last minute by Leslie Nielsen. Among the winners is Janet Wright for “Bordertown Cafe”.

 

1993 - This Hour Has 22 Minutes launches during Canada’s 35th general election.


March 1, 1993 - “The Dinner Party”, the final episode of the “Material World” series airs.


March 7, 1993 - At the 7th Gemini Awards, Barbara Hamilton is presented with the Earle Grey Award for Lifetime achievement.


June 5, 1993 - Yuk Yuks hosts the 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. portion of the Sick Kids Telethon in Toronto. Viewers are treated to performers including Mike Bullard, Glen Ottaway, Tim Conlon, Winston Spear, Harry Doupe, and Mike Wilmot closing it off in full Kiss-style makeup.


June 11 -20, 1993 - The Peoples Comedy Festival takes place in Toronto.


June 12, 1993 - Andrea Kelly produces the first of her “Comfort and Joy” benefits.


July 28 and 29, 1993 - A&E’s Comedy On The Road tapes at Montreal’s Comedy Nest as part of the Just For Laughs Festival. Performers include Murray Langston, Judy Croon, Mark Farrell, Chris Finn, John Rogers, Harry Doupe, Steve Levine, David Acer, Sean Keane, Derek Edwards, Jay Sankey, D.J. McCarthy, Radio Free Vestibule, Lorne Elliott, Brent Butt, and Bowser and Blue.


Sept. 9, 1993 - The first episdoe of CBC’s stand-up series COMICS! airs starring Mark Farrell.


Sept. 17, 1993 - Yuk Yuk’s sends out “Attention All Comics” notices to their roster. It is the announcement of 20% across-the-board pay cuts, as well as cuts to travel and accommodations.


Sept. 23, 1993 - Edmonton’s Wendel Meldrum guests as “Leslie the Low Talker” on the Seinfeld episode “The Puffy Shirt”.


Oct. 28, 1993 - Linda Kash guest plays Gwen, who tells George “it’s not you, its me” on the Seinfeld episode “The Lip Reader.

 

Dec. 13, 1993 - CODCO’s Tommy Sexton dies in St. John’s


Feb. 4, 1994 - Jim Carrey’s film “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective” is released.


March 4, 1994 - John Candy dies in Durabgo, Mexico while shooting “Wagons East”.


March 19, 1994 - Brent Butt headlines his first theatre show at the Broadway Theatre in Saskatoon.


April 21, 1994 - “Mr. Fabulous” Eric Tunney appears on the cover of Eye Weekly.


May, 1994 - Yuk Yuks close the Downtown location.


May 12, 1994 - The Comedy Core, a new club in Hamilton opens.


Aug. 1, 1994 - The first episode of the Vancant Lot TV series airs on CBC.


Sept. 29, 1994 - Final episode of the Vacant Lot TV series airs.


Oct. 1994 - The Comedy Cave opens in Surrey, BC.


Oct. 11, 1994 - The 23-date “Lords Of Flatland” tour of Saskatchewan, featuring Brent Butt, Andrew Carr, and Joel Walmsley, kicks of at the Armouries in Maple Creek.


Dec. 7, 1994 - Graham Greene hosts the 15th Genie Awards from the John Bassett Theatre in Toronto.


Dec. 16, 1994 - Jim Carrey’s film “Dumb and Dumber” opens.
