Anecdotes
| Once upon a time, I was but a lad learning the business end of being a professional magician. With each gig I did I learned a valuable lesson about what to ask the client before hand. Rather than just saying YES to any gig that came my way, I had to be selective about my shows. I had to be sure that the audience I was going to perform for would enjoy my act rather than complain that it did not make sense to them.
Unfortunately you learn these things the hard way. The day that really rang home for me was the day I did a benefit show for a local charity supporting the Blind community. It didn't even occur to me that I would be performing close up magic for a largely blind audience. I discovered this upon arrival, when I saw the canes and sunglasses. I was given a describer, to tell the few audience members I had what I was doing. (Don't Get ahead of me now) I know how much this sounds like a skit from family guy, or even mad TV but what I'm about to tell you is the truth. The describer not only told the audience about the effect I was performing, but due to the angle she was at, she was also telling every one exactly how I was doing it. "The ace is now the second card from the top of the deck, so he turns over 2 cards as one... he turns both cards over and places the top card in the middle, and the ace is still on the top... oh dear" |
